Sufficient overlap between photos

In order for D Joiner to be able to stitch two or more images together there must be overlapping areas in these images. This overlap has two purposes:

  1. To provide space for placing links to join photos.
  2. To provide a working area so D Joiner can blend photos if this is required because of exposure and colour differences.

The figure on the right shows two horizontally adjacent photographs from a panoramic shoot. The red shaded boxes indicate the approximate overlap region in each of these photographs. In this case this overlap is roughly one quarter of the width of the photo so the two photos have 25% overlap.

For best results we suggest that each pair of photos has between 25% and 50% overlap.

Horizontal Overlap

When shooting multi-row spherical panoramas you will also have to leave vertical overlap between rows. In the figure on the right the vertical overlap is about 33%.

It is usually better to have a little too much overlap than to be short of it so in case of doubt we suggest erring on the side of caution and allowing a little more, even it it requires an extra row or column of photos.

It will only take a little more time to shoot and it might save you having to throw away an almost useable set of photos
